What is a METAR?
METAR (Meteorological Aerodrome Report) is an internationally standardized format for reporting weather conditions at airports. It is issued every hour or when there are significant changes in conditions.
METAR Components:
- Airport: Airport ICAO code (e.g., KJFK, EGLL)
- Day: Day and time UTC of the observation
- Direction: Direction in degrees and speed in knots
- Horizontal: Horizontal distance in meters
- Precipitation: Precipitation, fog, thunderstorm, etc.
- Coverage: Coverage and height of layers
- Temperature: Temperature and dew point in °C
- QNH: Atmospheric pressure at sea level in hPa
